Case Study: Interior Render
Shading, lighting, rendering, and compositing an architectural interior using Mental Ray and Nuke.
Final Still Composite

Software Maya | Nuke | Photoshop
Render Engine Mental Ray 3.8
Shading Pipeline mia_material_for_passes
Compositing 100+ Render Passes
Project Objective & Setup
The goal of this project was to achieve an advanced interior architectural render using a linear workflow. The final image is built out of more than 100 composited passes, giving granular aesthetic control over reflections, refractions, diffuse color, and ambient occlusion levels.
A linear workflow was maintained by pre-correcting gamma curves for textures and shading elements inside Autodesk Maya. The scene was rendered using raw 32-bit floating-point OpenEXR and TIFF image sequences to preserve full dynamic range.
Technical Workflow
- Shader Configuration: Utilizing mia_material_for_passes with Mental Ray production shaders to output dedicated lighting variables.
- Indirect Lighting: Resolving diffuse global illumination using Final Gather with high-density indirect ray parameters.
- Compositing Integration: Rebuilding the beauty pass in Foundry Nuke by mathematically adding reflection, diffuse direct, indirect lighting, specular, ambient occlusion, and refraction passes.
