Rig Architecture & Execution

This project focuses on the implementation of a responsive facial animation rig inside Autodesk Maya. The system is designed to provide animators with clean, intuitive screen-based slider controls that drive complex blendshapes and joint deformation trees.

By mapping spatial coordinates of custom control curves to SDKs (Set Driven Keys) and custom expression nodes in Maya, the character's facial nodes smoothly interpolate between targets (e.g. mouth shape, eyelid closures, eyebrow deformations) without coordinate slip.

Adopted Workflow

  1. Sculpting Blendshapes: Creating localized deformer targets to shape phonetic structures and emotional expressions.
  2. Joint System: Setting up joint hierarchies for structural facial boundaries (jaw, eyes) to overlay on top of blendshape matrices.
  3. Control Interface: Linking visual screen controllers directly to driver attributes, ensuring low-overhead real-time playback during animating.
