What Is Simulation?
Simulation in VFX means using physics calculations to generate realistic motion automatically. Instead of animating every flame, every drop of water, or every piece of debris by hand, you set up a simulation that calculates how those elements should behave based on the laws of physics. The result is motion that looks natural and complex in ways that would be impossible to achieve manually.
Fluid simulation is used for fire, smoke, clouds, and explosions. The simulator divides space into a grid of voxels, which are like 3D pixels, and calculates how fluid properties like density, temperature, and velocity change over time. Hot gas rises, cool gas sinks, and the interaction creates the turbulent, organic shapes we associate with fire and smoke. The pyro solver in Houdini is the most widely used fluid simulator in VFX.
Rigid body simulation handles solid objects that collide and break. When a building collapses, each piece of concrete and steel is a rigid body with mass, velocity, and collision shape. The simulator calculates how they bounce, slide, and stack based on physics. You can control the material properties to make things shatter like glass, crumble like concrete, or bend like metal.
Soft body and cloth simulation handles deformable objects. Cloth simulators calculate how fabric folds, stretches, and wrinkles as it moves. They account for the fabric's stiffness, weight, and friction. Soft body simulators handle things like jelly, flesh, and rubber that deform on impact. These simulations are essential for realistic character clothing, creature effects, and any scene with flexible materials.
Particle simulation is the most versatile type. Particles are small points that can represent anything from sparks to rain to magic dust. Each particle has properties like position, velocity, color, and lifetime. The simulator applies forces like gravity, wind, and turbulence to the particles. Particle systems are used for everything from simple spark effects to complex crowd simulations with thousands of characters.
