Render Software: RenderMan, Arnold, V-Ray, Redshift
Choosing a render engine is one of the most important decisions a VFX studio makes. The renderer affects everything from the look of the final image to the speed of production to the hardware you need to buy. The four most popular renderers in professional VFX are RenderMan, Arnold, V-Ray, and Redshift. Each has its own philosophy and strengths.
RenderMan is the oldest and most established renderer, developed by Pixar. It has been used on virtually every Pixar film and many major VFX blockbusters. RenderMan uses a proprietary architecture called REYES for some effects and path tracing for others. It is known for its extremely high quality, its robust feature set, and its integration with the USD pipeline. RenderMan is a premium product with a corresponding price tag.
Arnold was developed by Sony Pictures Imageworks and later acquired by Autodesk. It is a pure path tracer known for its simplicity and reliability. Arnold's strength is that it produces good results with minimal tweaking. The default settings often work well, which makes it popular for both film and television. Arnold is deeply integrated with Maya and is the default renderer in many studios.
V-Ray is the most versatile renderer, with versions for almost every 3D application. It is widely used in architectural visualization, product design, and VFX. V-Ray offers both CPU and GPU rendering, biased and unbiased modes, and an extensive library of materials and lights. It is known for being fast and flexible, though it can require more manual tuning than Arnold.
Redshift is a GPU accelerated renderer that has become extremely popular in recent years. It is much faster than CPU renderers for most scenes, which makes it ideal for fast paced production. Redshift is biased, using clever optimizations to produce clean images quickly. It is widely used in television, commercials, and increasingly in film. The main limitation is GPU memory, which can be a problem for very complex scenes.
