Render Farms and Distributed Rendering

Render Farms and Distributed Rendering

A render farm is a cluster of computers dedicated to rendering frames. Because VFX rendering is so computationally expensive, a single computer would take months to render a feature film. Render farms solve this by distributing the work across hundreds or thousands of machines, each rendering different frames or different parts of the same frame. This parallel processing makes it possible to complete complex shots in hours instead of weeks.

Render farm management software handles the distribution of work. You submit a job to the farm, and the scheduler divides it into tasks. Each task is a frame or a tile that gets sent to an available render node. The scheduler tracks progress, handles failures, and reassigns tasks if a node goes down. Popular farm management tools include Deadline, Tractor, and Royal Render.

Setting up a render farm requires careful planning. All render nodes need access to the same assets, textures, and scene files. This is usually done with a shared network storage system like NAS or SAN. The render nodes also need the same software versions and licenses. License management is critical because render farms can consume hundreds of licenses simultaneously.

Cloud rendering is an alternative to building your own farm. Services like AWS Thinkbox, Google Cloud, and render specific providers like RebusFarm let you rent render time on demand. This is great for studios that do not have the capital to build a farm or need extra capacity for a big project. The downside is cost and data transfer time. Uploading terabytes of assets to the cloud takes time.

Best practices for render farms include always testing a single frame before submitting the full job, using consistent file paths across all nodes, and setting up automatic error handling. Most farm software can send notifications when jobs complete or fail. It is also important to monitor render node temperatures and power usage, especially for on premises farms where hardware maintenance is your responsibility.
