Compositing
Compositing
Compositing is the process of combining multiple visual elements into a single image to create the illusion that they all belong in the same scene. In VFX, compositing is where everything comes together. The 3D renders, the live action plates, the green screen keys, the particle effects, and the matte paintings are all blended together by the compositor to create the final shot that the audience sees.
The compositor's job is to make the invisible visible and the visible invisible. They add effects that were never there, like explosions or creatures, and they remove things that should not be there, like rigging wires or green screen spill. But the most important skill is making sure the audience never notices any of it. A perfect composite is one where the viewer has no idea any VFX was done at all.
Compositing software works with layers and nodes. In layer based compositing, like After Effects, you stack elements on top of each other and adjust their opacity, blending modes, and masks. In node based compositing, like Nuke and Fusion, you connect nodes in a tree structure where each node performs a specific operation. Node based compositing is more powerful and flexible, which is why it is the standard for professional VFX.
Keying is one of the most common compositing operations. When footage is shot against a green or blue screen, the compositor uses a keyer to remove the background color and reveal the transparency behind the subject. Good keying requires even lighting on the screen, no spill on the subject, and careful fine tuning of the keyer parameters. Spill suppression removes the green or blue tint that bounces onto the subject from the screen.
Color grading is the final step in compositing. The compositor adjusts the color, contrast, and brightness of all the elements so they match each other and create the desired mood. This might involve matching the CG render to the live action plate, adding a filmic look, or creating a stylized color palette. A good color grade can sell a composite even when the individual elements are not perfect.
