AI in VFX
AI in VFX
Artificial intelligence is changing VFX in profound ways. Tasks that used to take hours of manual work can now be done in seconds by AI models. Rotoscoping, the process of tracing around objects frame by frame, can be automated with AI segmentation models. Tracking can be enhanced with AI feature matching. Even creative tasks like generating textures and backgrounds are being transformed by generative AI.
Rotoscoping is one of the most tedious tasks in VFX. Every frame, an artist has to draw a mask around a moving object. AI powered rotoscoping tools like those in Nuke and After Effects can now generate accurate masks automatically. The artist only needs to clean up the edges and fix any mistakes. This saves enormous amounts of time and lets artists focus on creative work instead of repetitive manual labor.
AI upscaling is another important application. When you need to use low resolution footage in a high resolution project, AI upscalers can add detail that was not there. Tools like Topaz Video AI and Gigapixel use machine learning to predict what the missing detail should look like. The results are not perfect, but they are much better than traditional upscaling methods. This is especially useful for archival footage and stock elements.
Generative AI is being used to create textures, background plates, and even entire environments. Instead of spending days building a city from scratch, an artist can generate a photorealistic cityscape with a text prompt and then composite it into the shot. This raises questions about copyright and artistic credit, but there is no doubt that generative AI is becoming a powerful tool in the VFX artist's toolkit.
The key to using AI in VFX is understanding its limitations. AI tools are not magic. They make mistakes, they can produce artifacts, and they do not always understand the context of a shot. The best workflow is to use AI to handle the tedious parts and let human artists focus on the creative decisions and quality control. AI is a tool, not a replacement for skilled artists.
